George Nelson Barnes Sr., 93, of Westminster, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, at Brightview Westminster Ridge. Born June 1, 1920 in Winfield, he was the son of the late Edward A. Barnes, Sr. and Nona O. Penn Barnes. He was married to Doris Owings Barnes, a locally prominent piano player and entertainer, for 57 years until her death in 2000. He was a well-known retired custom builder and developer whose interests included gardening, hunting and antiquing. In honor of his late wife, he funded and participated in the Barnes-Ferrence Piano Competition each year at McDaniel College, awarding scholarships to talented contestants. Surviving are brothers Edward Barnes Jr., of Florida, and Everett Barnes and wife Louise, of Florida; sister-in-law Janet Barnes of Winfield; sons Nelson Barnes and wife Janice, of Westminster; Donald Barnes, of Florida, Steven Barnes and wife Cheryl, of Westminster, and Kevin Barnes and wife Donna, of Westminster; daughter Brenda Prufer and husband Shawn, of Oklahoma; grandchildren Teresa, Kim, Connie, Donnie, Dean-na', Joshua and Amanda Barnes and Eric and Chelsea Prufer; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-granchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by daughter-in-law Beverly Barnes and granddaughter Dawn Barnes. Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Fletcher Funeral Home, 254 East Main St., Westminster, MD 21157. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Deer Park Cemetery.
