After the Black Hawk War ended in 1836, Thomas Smith Bowen left Erie Co., New York with his brother William and traveled to Michigan, then Green County, Wisconsin. At the time of their arrival in Clarno Township, there were only six houses -made of logs and mud- in the area.
Thomas and William became active in the growth of the county; they both served as officers of Green Co. and were instrumental in establishing the first school in the area. Thomas was well known for his integrity. When there was a severe shortage of corn, many other farmers profited by charging inflated prices. He, on the other hand, would charge only the usual price of 25 cents per bushel, limiting the buyers to one bushel each. In 1852, Thomas was appointed State Senator. During his first term, he was called home due to his wife's illness. Seven years after her death, he married again, to Margaret Gibler (Feb. 1, 1862). He died Oct. 20, 1883 in Clarno Township of Cerebral Thrombosis. He was buried in the family plot on the Bowen Homestead in Green County.
