John Bailey was a saddler with the pack train and participated in the hilltop fight during the Battle of the Little Bighorn (Company B, 7th Cavalry) on June 25 and 26, 1876. After his retirement from the Army in 1895, he worked as an elevator operator and later died as a result of multiple injuries from an elevator accident. He was married twice. His first marriage ended in divorce on February 17, 1869. His second marriage was to a divorcee, Margaret Katherine Johnson (born December 15, 1840), on September 6, 1894, in Chicago, Illinois. They had one daughter Florence who was born on August 2, 1899, in St. Paul, Minnesota. Margaret died on October 6, 1919, in St. Paul where she is buried.
