Son of John Greer Jr. and first wife, Sarah Ann Elliot.

He first married "Nancy Wilcocksen"(DAR Patriot Index), which also lists his military service as "NC, CS, Commisary." He served under the command of Col. Benjamin Cleveland in the Revolutionary War.

They settled at "Old Fields" on the west bank of the New River in what is now called Ashe Co., NC.

He second married Mrs. Sarah Atkinson (Thomas) Jones, bond date: April 26, 1791, in Wilkes County, Bondsman: Benjamin Jones, witness: Chs Gordon. (North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868 and State Archives in Raleigh, NC)

They were both listed as members of the Three Forks Baptist Church of Watauga Co., NC. Sarah was dismissed by letter in 1808, when they moved and settled in Green River, Green Co., KY.
