BURBA Leland Edward Burba, 73 of Gahanna, died Tuesday, December 25, 2012. He was born March 23, 1939 in Columbus to the late Leslie and Nellie (Somers) Burba.
He was a 1956 graduate of South High School and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He attended OSU for education, but left to become a race car driver for Pontiac which was sponsored by Ralph DeLorean. He then went on to be a new car salesman for Marte Pontiac and then to Columbus Southern Power where he worked for 32 years.
He was past District Govenor starting in 1982 of 13K Lions Club and current Director of the Pataskala Lions Club. He was a Melvin Jones Fellow, Jim Coffey award recipient and a founding member of the Ohio Lions Foundation. He had perfect attendance for 44 years, worked on many projects and won many awards from the Lions Club and the electric company.
He collected toy trains, Ertl cars from 1930 and up, race cars, farm toys and specialty pocket knives. He was a NASCAR fan and attended races whenever possible. He bowled on the oldest bowling league, Men's Commercial League for 42 years. He was a member of First Congregational Church UCC since he was 8 years old.
On July 4th of this year he and his wife Nancy celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with 150 of their friends and family. She was the love of his life and he knew it the minute he met her. They were soul mates and extremely close. Even though he appeared to some to have a gruff exterior, he had a heart of gold and would go out of his way to help anyone.
Lee and I could not have made it through this difficult time without the support, love and unselfish caring of cousins, special friends and church families. He was very spiritual and loving and meticulous about his appearance. His way of expressing his love of anything was with the term "Big Time" and when Nancy asked him if he loved her just before he died, he said "Big Time". He is survived by his wife Nancy and two special kitties, Spotty and Woody.
Calling hours will be Thursday, January 3, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. with a Lions Club Service at 7:30 p.m. at SCHOEDINGER MIDTOWN CHAPEL and Friday, January 4, 2013 from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. at First Congregational Church. Interment will follow in Green Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Mid Ohio Food Bank, Lions International or Mount Carmel East Pallative Care Team.
