Thomas served in the Civil War, a Private in Co. E, 7th PA. Thomas was age 21, lived Lamar PA, was mustered in on Oct. 29, 1861, he was 5'10" age 21, dark hair and black eyes, a Farmer, born Clinton County, PA. Mustered out on Aug. 23, 1863 at Camp Greble, PA.

Thomas was married to Mary Best.

1880 Lock Haven, Clinton, PA, Thomas Toner 39 born abt 1841 PA, a Farmer, Mary M 45 born abt 1835 PA, Kate E Brady 23, John R Toner 8, Margaret P Toner 1.

Thomas died March 31, 1888 at Lock Haven, PA. and was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Death of Mr. Toner.
Thomas J. Toner, who lived on Commerce street, died at 20 minutes of one o'clock p.m. Saturday, of consumption. He was 49 years old on the 4th day of November last. He left a wife, a son and daughter and a step-daughter. The funeral took place on Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. Services at the house by Rev. Mr. Taylor, of the English Lutheran church. Interment in Cedar Hill cemetery.

Note: There are two Cedar Hill Cemetery books, the original and a 2nd edition. In the first edition it has Thomas Toner SR as died 1880 age 73, nothing about being born 1840.
The 2nd edition combined the two and put Thomas born 1840 and died 1880, but Thomas SR died 1880 and Thomas Jr died 1888. This reason, may people have the two Thomas's confused or the wrong birth/death dates.

Aaron S. Best was born June 27, 1839, in Clinton county, Pa., a son of John W. and Catharine (Schaefer) Best, of German descent, and native born and reared in Pennsylvania. John Best was born in 1809 and died in 1881. He was the son of Peter Best, a native of Pennsylvania, of German parentage. In the year 1860, John W. Best, accompanied by his wife and seven children, crossed the country to find a new home in Kansas. He had made a trip to Atchison county in the previous year, and, after carefully looking over the ground, made up his mind that the country had a great future, and he decided to move his family so as to make a permanent home in Kansas. The Best family arrived in Atchison in March of 1861, and at once moved to a farm in old Monrovia. In June of the same year, the wife and mother died, at the age of forty-five years. The following children were born to John W. Best and wife: Mary and Elvina, deceased, in Pennsylvania; Henry, living at Parr, Tex.; Louis, Luther and Reuben, deceased; Mrs. Henrietta Lamberson, of Argentry, Ark.; and Michael, deceased.
