Mary's Parents: John Cooper Chancellor and Sarah Jane Trickett-Chancellor. Parents were both born in Virginia and raised their family in Scotland co., Missouri.

Mary's Siblings:Charlie Chancellor, Thomas Nelson Chancellor, Mary Catherine Chancellor (Pettigrew, Hudgins), and Emma R. Chancellor (Persinger) George Cooper Chancellor, Serepto Elizabeth Chancellor, John W. Chancellor, Edmond Franklin Chancellor, James Robert Chancellor.

At age 17, Mary married John Neel Pettigrew on Feb 8, 1885 in Chismville, Logan co, Arkansas by Rev. JD Best.

They lived in Chismville, Arkansas.

In 1887, family moved to Scyene,Texas (Mesquite) then moved to Dallas, Texas in 1891. John died in 1896 while on a business trip and without a will. In the 1897 probate packet from Dallas, his property was determined to be a value of $1600.00,of which his wife received $750.00(with her new husband Charles Hudgins married Oct 17, 1897 in Dallas, TX),and the children were given trust accounts and a guardian to oversee the moneys. The wife (Mary Catherine Chancellor) died in 1899 of tuberculosis. Her new husband (Charles Hudgins) disappeared and there is no further information. The children went to live with a foster care family, who beat the children and abused them. The two boys Chris and Silas ran away from home at the ages of 9 and 12,jumping on a train, passing through town. A biography that Silas Neel wrote of his journeys, which is the best genealogical information we have. The 2 daughters stayed with the foster family and evidently had their money stolen, and lived as virtual slaves until age of marriage.

Mary Catherine Chancellor----------------------Mary Catherine Chancellor (1-28-1868--8-14-1899) married John Neel Pettigrew on 2-8-1885 in Chismville Arkansas. The marriage license states both husband and wife reside in Logan County,Chismville Arkansas. At the time of marriage, Mary was 17 and John 26. In 1886, the 1st child was born,Minnie Ellen Pettigrew(6-11-1886---2-28-1887).The second child was Millie Betty Pettigrew (2-26-1889--8-4-1969). The third child was Christopher Columbus Pettigrew(5-24-1891--3-21-1911. The fourth child was Baby Pettigrew(12-7-1892--12-7-1892)--This baby was buried in Logan County, in Taylor Cemetary and Levi Chancellor? and Joshua Chancellor? were buried beside her(These names must fit into the genealogy somewhere,but I haven't been able to locate any info on either man.) In 1892,the family moved from Chismville, Arkansas to Scyene, Texas(close to Dallas)in a covered wagon. John rented property to farm, and the tax records show and increase each year for years 1883,1884,1885, in property and holdings. The fifth child was born Silas Neel Pettigrew(5-24-1894--1-1-1983). In 1896, John Neel Pettigrew while on temporary business in Palo Pinto County(Mineral Wells,Texas)died. The sixth child born was Eva Lena Pettigrew(3-1-1897--12-25-1927-died of TB). In 1897, Mary Catherine Pettigrew married Charles C. Hudgins in Dallas(m11-17--1897). We have marriage certificate for this ,but no further info on Charles Hudgins. In 1897, Mary and Charles settled the estate of John Neel Pettigrew by signing for $750.00 cash. In 1899, Mary died(probably from TB). All children are sent to live with foster family, the Walthalls, who did not treat them very well.
