Martha Elverda, known as Verda, was the 11th & last child of Amaziah Robert & Sarah Ann (Fowler) Sparks.

She was married three times. One marriage was to William E. Burdett, however, nothing is known about him or the date they were married.

Verda married Oscar Eugene McCandless in Centralia, Lewis Co, WA in 1906. They had two children: Hilda Arlene, born in Centralia on April 9, 1908, & John Adrain, born in Tenino, Thurston Co, WA on May 20, 1909.

Her last marriage was to Harold E. Stevenson in Imperial Co, CA on March 9, 1960.

On April 16 - 19, 1910, Oscar shown as Eugene & Elveda, ages 31 & 23, lived in Tenino, Thurston Co, WA where he had a job as a carpenter. They had been married 4 years; Alverda had given birth to two children: Arland & John, ages 2 & 10 months.

Oscar, age 40, & Elverda, were living at 511 Davis in Centralia, WA when he registered for the WWI draft on Sept. 12, 1918. He was working as a shingle sawyer for W.C. Yoeman Lumber Company in Pe Ell. His date of birth was Oct. 3, 1877. He was described as slender, medium height, gray eyes, & black hair. His name was signed: Oscar Eugene McCandless.

On Jan. 9, 1920, Gene & Verda, ages 41 & 33, were renting a home in Centralia. He was still working as a shingle sawyer. Their daughter & son, Arlind & John, were ages 11 & 10. Ethel Starkson, a widow, age 30, who had a job as a waitress in a hotel, was boarding with them.

Their daughter, Hilda Arlene, married Alton A. Blankenship on January 8, 1927.

"The fire department made a run this afternoon to the home of Mrs. O.E. McCandless, 1012 West Walnut Street, where hot ashes piled against a woodshed had set fire to the shed. The damage was slight."

On April 8, 1930, O E. & M.E. (Oscar Eugene & Martha Elverda), ages 52 & 43, Eugene, owned a home in Centralia valued at $4,500. He worked as a carpenter. He had served during WWI.

Their daughter, Arline, age 21, & her husband, A.A. Blankenship, 24, lived with them. A.A. had a job as a logger.

The final member of their family, shown as a boarder, was Eugene L. Scranton, age 4 years & 1 one month.

Oscar died in Torrance, Los Angeles Co, CA on November 24, 1958. Verda married Harold E. Stevenson in Imperial Co, CA on March 9, 1960.

Graveside funeral services are Friday for a native of Lewis County who died Sunday at Long Beach, Calif., where she had resided for the past 15 years.

The deceased is Mrs. Verda Stevenson, 77, born May 17, at Mossyrock. She also lived in Centralia for some years.

Surviving are a son, John McCandless, Gig Harbor; daughter, Mrs. Arlene Joppich, Lakewood, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Effie Grimes, Shelton, and Mrs. Lelia Grubb, Chehalis; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services are Friday at 11 a.m., at Mountain View, Centralia, with the Rev. Harvey C. Hartling officiating. Arrangements are by Newell-Hoerling's, Centralia."
