COLONEL ROBERT ALLEN PORTS, USA (Ret.)
Memorial services will be held for Colonel Robert Allen Ports, USA (Ret.), at 3:00 p.m., Monday, April 10, in the Protestant Chapel, Presidio of San Francisco, Calif. Graveside services will take place Wednesday afternoon a the U.S. Military Academy Cemetery, West Point, New York.
Colonel Ports, 62, a native of Columbus, Ohio, died Friday, April 7, at the Letterman General Hospital after a brief hospitalization. He had made his home at 2335 Pacific Avenue, San Francisco since retiring from the Army at the Presidio in 1960 after more than thirty years of active service, and was associated with the Western Title Insurance Company of San Francisco.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn S. Ports, and their daughter, Miss Susan M. Ports, of San Francisco, and two sisters, Mrs. Clement R. Roach and Mrs. Marion A. Bonham, both of Columbus, Ohio.
A graduate of Ohio State University, 1927, and the U.S. Military Academy, 1930, the U.S. Army Artillery School, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the Armed Forces Staff College, Colonel Ports served during World War II as Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, 11th Airborne Division in New Guinea and as Division Chief of Staff, G-3 and Division Artillery Executive Officer, 32d Infantry Division and Commanding Officer, 126th Field Artillery Battalion in the Philippines Campaign.
After the war he was stationed at the Presidio of San Francisco as Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, Sixth U.S. Army; was Director of Training for the Amphibious Training Command, U.S. Pacific Fleet, Coronado, Calif., from 1949 to 1952 and served at the headquarters of the U. S. European Command and the Seventh Army in Europe from 1952 through 1955. He was Commanding Officer, Sixth U.S. Army Special Troops and Headquarters Commandant at the Presidio of San Francisco immediately prior to his retirement.
His decorations include the Silver Star, the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Purple Heart and the Distinguished Unit Badge.
He was associated with the Bay Area West Point Society, the Presidio of San Francisco Officers Club and the American Legion.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the American Thoracic Socity, 1740 Broadway, New York, N.Y. 10019.
