Veteran Richard Eric Almen Born July 7th, 1929 in Minneapolis, MN to Eric and Martha Almen. He has a twin brother, Ronald. He grew up in Minnesota, graduating from Washburn High School, Minneapolis, in 1947. He served in the Navy from 1947 until his retirement in 1979, achieving the rank of Commander. He received a fleet appointment to the US Naval Academy and was commissioned as an Ensign upon graduation in 1953. His twin brother also became a Naval Officer. During his career, he served on seven ships, and two Naval Air Stations - Adak, Alaska, and Argentia, Newfoundland. Overseas assignments included four years as a US Navy advisor to the Turkish Navy in Ankara,Turkey, and four years as Chief of the Joint Petroleum Office, American Headquarters European Command, Stuttgart, Germany. While assigned to the Defense Supply Agency, he traveled extensively in the Pacific Theater, and met his future wife, Margaret, in Tokyo, Japan. His technical specialties were logistics, transportation, and petroleum management. He was awarded eight Navy medals - the Defense Meritorius Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the US Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He enjoyed history, archeology, traveling, hunting, and barbershop quartet singing. He was a member of the Association of Naval Aviators, the Kitsap Barbershop Chorus, and the Kitsap Monday Hikers. He was a tour guide on the USS Turner Joy for many years. In retirement, he lived in Bremerton, WA for 30 years, and moved to Horizon House, Seattle in 2010. At his request there will not be a memorial service. The United States Navy will perform Burial at Sea. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, his twin brother, Ronald (and Beverley) a nephew, Dennis, and two nieces - Sheri and Barbara.
