Educator. He was recognized as one of the nation's most distinguished citizens and educators through the National Institute of Social Sciences Gold Medal Award. From 1914 to 1921, he served as the seventh president of the University of Arizona. In 1921, he became the fifth president the University of Southern California serving until 1947. Under his administration he expanded USC's professional training programs and added nine major structures to the university campus. USC had attained full national accreditation, established a graduate school to unify graduate work across the university, and had become a large non-denominational institution. He also established a subdivision within the school which included a College of Letters, Arts, Sciences and the USC Department of Cinema, founded by director Cecil B. DeMille as the country's first filmmaking program.
