Max graduated from Monroe City High School in 1946. He was a farmer and a cattleman, and drove a school bus for the South Knox School Corporation for 30 years. A member of the Indiana Presbyterian Church, he was also a member of the Hadi Shrine Temple, the Evansville Scottish Rite, the Washington, IN chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Edwardsport Masonic Lodge. Max was a past president of the Knox County Shrine Club, and was a past master of the Monroe City Masonic Lodge.
