Robert March (1928 - 2012)
Lt. Col. Robert Bennett March of Jackson, passed away on Thursday, December 13, 2012 at Jackson Madison County General Hospital.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, December 17, 2012 in the North Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons Interment will follow with full Military Honors in Lexington City Cemetery.
Robert "Bob" was born and grew up on a farm in Lincoln County, TN. He attended Boonshill School, a small country school, thru his sophomore year of high school. Bob always said of all the schools he ever attended, Boonshill was the best. He spent his last two years of high school at Columbia Military Academy graduating with honors in 1946.
He was accepted in the Naval ROTC unit at Vanderbilt University graduating and Commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the Marine Corps in 1950. Shortly thereafter he married Carlene Dennison of Lexington, TN at the Marine Corp Chapel on the Marine Base at Quantico, VA. He and Carlene celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on August 26, 2012. Bob and Carlene's first Son, Robert Bradford, was born at Camp Lejeune, NC in 1952. When Brad was six weeks old Bob left for duty in the Korean War where he saw combat through the signing of the cease fire in July, 1953.
After the Korean tour, Bob was assigned to duty in Portsmouth, VA where he and Carlene greeted their second son John Steven in December, 1955. After several tours of duty, most of which Carlene and the boys were able to follow; Bob was assigned to combat duty in Vietnam in 1968. That was followed by orders to Okinawa where the family was allowed to accompany. That tour lasted two years at which time Bob retired from the Marines after 21 years of service.
Bob and his family moved to Memphis where Bob worked for the Memphis Publishing Company, publisher of the Commercial Appeal and the Memphis Press Scimitar. He was Purchasing Manager for that company for 19 years retiring in 1990.Bob and Carlene moved to Jackson in 1999.
Lt. Col. March is survived by his wife, Carlene, the love of his life and best friend; his son Brad, son Steve and his wife, Jan; 4 grandchildren, Nicholas, Andrew, Matthew, and Katherine.
