She was born in Decatur, Alabama, the daughter of Herman and Ruth Ewing Blackwell. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Duane Wesley Blackwell and William Nelson Blackwell.
She is survived by her son, Henry; brothers, Robert (Carolyn) Blackwell and Victor (Kim) Blackwell; sisters, Dorothy (Dejustice) Coleman, Doris (Stanley) Butts, Wilma Julia Conwell, Clara Jean (Samuel) Johnson, Mable Blackwell and Ave Maria Blackwell Alvarado and numerous nieces and nephews.
She earned her bachelors degree from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and a Master of Science degree in Library and Information Sciences from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
She was the senior executive reference librarian for John Deere and Company for 26 years, retiring in 2000.
She was actively involved in her community, serving on the board of the Rock Island County Health Department, chairman of the board of directors for Project NOW, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., and president of the Quad City Negro Heritage Society.
