NORTONVILLE -- Darlene Marie Gerety, 71, Nortonville, died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at a Topeka hospital.
Mrs. Gerety had worked as a cook at St. Joseph Catholic School, Nortonville, and then as a receptionist and insurance clerk for doctors in Nortonville.
She was born Jan. 31, 1930, at Atchison, the daughter of Leo and Marie Giesen Lutz. She graduated from the Mount St. Scholastica Academy High School and St. Benedict's College, both at Atchison, with a degree in sociology. She had lived in Nortonville since 1961.
Mrs. Gerety was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the church Altar Society.
She married Jerome J. Berning in October 1953. He died in January 1958. She married William E. Gerety on Jan. 28, 1961, at Atchison. He survives.
Survivors also include two sons, Michael Gerety, Effingham, and Joe Gerety, Nortonville; six daughters, Sharon Stephens Nortonville, Lynn Ledbetter, Perry, Sandy Linderman, Manhattan, Debbie Briar, Emporia, Karen Gerety, Aberdeen, S.D., and Lisa McCurry, Westminster, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandson.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Nortonville. Burial will be in St. Ann's Church Cemetery, Effingham. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at the O'Trimble Funeral Home, Nortonville, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the St. Joseph Catholic Church or St. Joseph Catholic School.
