At the outbreak of the Civil War, William served in Co. H, 7th Regiment, New Jersey Infantry; which went to Washington, D.C. at the orders of President Lincoln to help defend the nations capital. He served until the end in April 1865.
After the war, William moved to New York where he met and married Miss Margaret Ann Keiley, daughter of Mathew Keiley, a prominent builder in the city. William and Margaret made their home in Elizabeth, New Jersey where he worked as a banker with Citizens Bank. This union was blessed with the following known children:
Frederick Keiley (1868-1931)
Ida Vleit {m. Runyon & Dracas}(1871-1946)
William Edgar (1873-1874)
Mary Belle {m. Pyle}(1875-1943)
Margaret Hedges {m. Wibur}(1879-1930)
For the next forty years, they lived in Elizabeth and where members of First Presbyterian Church; which William would become a ruling Elder and trustee. When his son, Frederick came of age, he founded an insurance company in New York City; which they were partners until his retirement.
William Gaston departed this life on the 18th of September 1907 at the age of 65 years. He was buried with full Mason Honors by the Washington Lodge of Free Masons and officiated by Rev. Dr. Whitaker, pastor of First Presbyterian Church.
