Parents James Crawford (1798-1865) & Hannah McKnight (1805-1889). Missionary to Damascus in 1857. D.D. (from Belfast) in c1884.

After the death of his father, James Crawford (d.1865), John returned to Argyle. During that visit (around 1867), John penned the following note (which is still in possession of a descendant):

"I was born Feb. 8, 1827 in the village of Argyle, Wash. Co. N.Y. My father was a saddler and harness maker. His ancestors were of Scottish origin. The date of their arrival in this country is not known. They first settled in the town of Little Britain, Orange Co., N.Y. but at the time of the Revolution they removed to Washington Co. N.Y. He was a man of strict integrity and good habits and enjoyed the respect and confidence of all who knew him."

[Little Britain is no more, but was in the area now occupied by the Stewart International Airport near New Windsor in Orange County, NY].

John's grandfather (also John Crawford, c1768-1831) and his siblings Matthew, David and Barbara Crawford are therefore believed to have been born in Orange County NY, although nothing is known of their parents.

This is in direct contradiction to the account in the Gibson Papers, which claims this Crawford line came from Pelham Massachusetts. Research suggests the John Crawford of Pelham (and wife Susannah Kelso) did buy land in Washington County NY, but they never settled there. These Crawford lines appear to be completely separate.
