DR CLARA MAY FREDERICK 84, of Front Royal, Virginia, formerly of Urbana, Ohio passed Monday, July 31, 2000 at the Warren Memorial Hospital.

She was born March 16, 1916, in Edgar County, Illinois.

Dr Frederick was the eldest child of William and Cora Hall Queen.

She graduated from Defiance College, Defiance, Ohio in 1946, and received her M.S. (1964) and Ph.D (1967) degrees from Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, in plant taxonomy. She had a distinguished career as a professor at Urbana University, Ohio from 1967 to 1985, and has a laboratory in the new Moore Science Center there named for her. She conducted extensive research and led student groups in the study of the Cedar Bog ecosystem in Champaign County, Ohio for which she was widely known. Early in her career, she was a high school teacher and coach at Olive Branch High School in Clark County, Ohio. Dr Frederick was a long-time resident of Urbana, where she was an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church before moving to Oakwood Village in Springfield, Ohio, where she was a member of the Northminster Presbyterian Church. She moved to Front Royal in March, 1999. Dr. Frederick was active in the AAUW and the American Rose Society, as well as, being a past state president of the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs. She had a particular love of orchids and raised many varieties in her home. She traveled widely throughout the world in her study of natural history, including visits to New Zealand, Australia, India, Kenya, and Tanzania.Among her many honors, Dr. Frederick was selected as citizen of the Year by the Urbana Area Chamber of Commerce in 1985. She was listed in Outstanding Educators of America, as well as, Who's Who in American Women. Her articles were widely published in scholarly and horticulture publications. She was preceded in death by 1992 by Dr. Victor R. Frederick, 77, her husband of 56 years; and in 1984 by her son, Dr. V. Ray Frederick, Jr., at the age of 36. Memorial services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 19, 2000, in the Urbana Presbyterian Church, 116 West Court Street, Urbana, Ohio 43078.

Private burial was held in Oak Dale Cemetery, Urbana, Ohio.
