She was born March 22, 1926 in Wilkesboro, NC to George Dewey Kennedy and Gertrude ("Tat") Johnson Kennedy. She graduated from North Wilkesboro High School and Woman's College, now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

After graduating from college, she came to Winston-Salem to work in the Personnel Department of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. It was here, in Winston-Salem, that she met her future husband, Norman V. Until her health began to decline, Mrs. Stockton was a very active member of Centenary United Methodist Church, where she served on the Official Board, and was a Sunday school teacher, circle leader, and member of the Altar Guild. For many years, she was a volunteer at Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community, and was on the Board of Directors. During her time there, she cherished her friendships with the residents and staff. In addition to her community involvement, she filled her life with numerous hobbies and interests, including a great passion for tending to her flower garden, which was admired by many.
