Partner in the law firm of Hamilton and Lyon which was the most prestigious firm in New York city in the med 1800's. He attended West Point, but it is unknown if he graduated from the school. During the Civil War he was on the staff of General Wool. In 1848 he was the Secretary of the United States Legation at Madrid. He was the first person to sign the roll of membership of the Knickerbocker Club when it was organized in 1871. He became president of that club and remained until his death. He married Angelica Livington in 1840 and survived Alexander.
