Son of David Cushing and Mary Souther Lapham, grandson of Hon. Captain Charles Whiting Cushing and Deborah Richmond Jacobs, Michael Lapham and Sarah Cushing, the daughter of James Cushing and Sarah Tower.

George was the husband of Deborah Ellen Cushing, the daughter of Hon. John Cushing and Harriet Jacob Gilkey. They were married 15 Jan 1860 in Hingham and had two sons:
* Wallace Gilkey Cushing b 1860
* Ralph Edwards Cushing b 1873

George was Proprietor and landlord of the "Cushing House", North Street, Hingham. George was also Chief of the Hingham Fire Department and was appointed Postmaster in 1888.
