Jesse Otto (or Earl) Mendenhall was born on December __, 1853 in Hamilton County, Indiana, the son of Peter Mendenhall, who was born on November 3, 1801 in Guilford County, North Carolina, and Matilda L. (Bray) Mendenhall, who was born on February 1, 1817 in __________, Tennessee.
Peter Mendenhall was born on Nov. 3, 1801 in Springfield, Guilford County, North Carolina, possibly the son of Richard Mendenhall and Mary "Polly" (Clemmons) Mendenhall.
Richard Mendenhall and his family moved from North Carolina to Ohio about 1819 and then to White Lick, Indiana about 1823. Peter Mendenhall was married 1st to __________ Landers about 1828, probably in Morgan County, Indiana. Ms. Landers is believed to have been born c. 1810 in Morgan County. One child;
1. Eliza Jane Mendenhall, was born in 1829 in Morgan County, Indiana to them.

Peter Mendenhall was married 2nd to Anna Priest c. 1830. They are known to have had a child;

This is definately our Jesse Mendenhall as his parents are listed as Peter Mendenhall and Matilda L. Bray, while Nola's parents are listed as Robert Welch and Mary Whitker, both of whom, according to the 1930 census, were born in Kentucky.

On October 14, 1930, Roy Smith, who was born on October 1, 1898 in Kentucky, the son of John Walter Smith and Nola May (Welch) Smith Mendenhall, was married to Grace Reeve, who was born on August 23, 1910 in Marion County, Indiana, the daughter of Joseph Reeve and Elizabeth (Ward) Reeve, in Hamilton County, Indiana.

It is said that, "Jesse was a holistic veternarian who used natural medicines. He loved to work with horses and had quite a reputation with horse owners in the Indianapolis, Indiana area. He died penniless because he refused to take the required courses to keep his license current." Jesse Otto (or Earl) Mendenhall died on ____________ __, 1932 at __________, Indiana. His mortal remains are believed to have been laid to rest in the Arcadia Cemetery in Arcadia, Hamilton County, Indiana. However, on May 3, 2014, a Find A Grave Contributor informed me that the "Cemetery Records at Hamilton East Public Library show no burial for him." So, it is not known if his remains were laid here or not.

The Nobelsville Daily Ledger edition of Wednesday, October 19, 1932 carried to following obituary;

Jesse Mendenhall, eight-one years of age, died in the city hospital at Indianapolis, Tuesday, his death following an operation for bladder trouble with which he had been afflicted for several years. The body was taken to Arcadia and can be viewed at the Schaffer undertaking parlors at any time until the hour of the service, which will be held at two o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Mount Pleasant Lutheran Church. Rev. Scotten, Pastor of the M. E. Church will be in charge.
Mr. Mendenhall resided in Arcadia for a number of years while he conducted a livery stable and race horse barn, but later he moved to Atlanta where he lived several years and some twenty years ago moved to Indianapolis where he has since resided.
His first wife was Mary Jane Sowers, daughter of Henry Sowers and wife, of Tipton County. She died and severak years later he remarried and the second wife survives. The sons and daughters living are S. E. Mendenhall, Miss Florence Slater, Mrs. Esther Taylor, of Peoria and Mrs. Ruth Simmons, of Champaign, Illinois."

No record of his mortal remains being laid in the Arcadia Cemetery can be found. Hopefully, we can find a tombstone for him in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Arcadia, Indiana.

This is definately our Jesse Mendenhall as his parents are listed as Peter Mendenhall and Matilda L. Bray, while Nola's parents are listed as Robert Welch and Mary Whitker, both of whom, according to the 1930 census, were born in Kentucky.

On October 14, 1930, Roy Smith, who was born on October 1, 1898 in Kentucky, the son of John Walter Smith and Nola May (Welch) Smith Mendenhall, was married to Grace Reeve, who was born on August 23, 1910 in Marion County, Indiana, the daughter of Joseph Reeve and Elizabeth (Ward) Reeve, in Hamilton County, Indiana.

It is said that, "Jesse was a holistic veternarian who used natural medicines. He loved to work with horses and had quite a reputation with horse owners in the Indianapolis, Indiana area. He died penniless because he refused to take the required courses to keep his license current." Jesse Otto (or Earl) Mendenhall died on ____________ __, 1932 at __________, Indiana. His mortal remains are believed to have been laid to rest in the Arcadia Cemetery in Arcadia, Hamilton County, Indiana. However, on May 3, 2014, a Find A Grave Contributor informed me that the "Cemetery Records at Hamilton East Public Library show no burial for him." So, it is not known if his remains were laid here or not.

The Nobelsville Daily Ledger edition of Wednesday, October 19, 1932 carried to following obituary;

Jesse Mendenhall, eight-one years of age, died in the city hospital at Indianapolis, Tuesday, his death following an operation for bladder trouble with which he had been afflicted for several years. The body was taken to Arcadia and can be viewed at the Schaffer undertaking parlors at any time until the hour of the service, which will be held at two o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Mount Pleasant Lutheran Church. Rev. Scotten, Pastor of the M. E. Church will be in charge.
Mr. Mendenhall resided in Arcadia for a number of years while he conducted a livery stable and race horse barn, but later he moved to Atlanta where he lived several years and some twenty years ago moved to Indianapolis where he has since resided.
His first wife was Mary Jane Sowers, daughter of Henry Sowers and wife, of Tipton County. She died and severak years later he remarried and the second wife survives. The sons and daughters living are S. E. Mendenhall, Miss Florence Slater, Mrs. Esther Taylor, of Peoria and Mrs. Ruth Simmons, of Champaign, Illinois."

No record of his mortal remains being laid in the Arcadia Cemetery can be found. Hopefully, we can find a tombstone for him in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Arcadia, Indiana.
