Jonathan Harrison and his father George Harrison were among Butler County's earliest settlers. He's Jonathan Harrison in most records, and Jonathan A. Harrison in the 1850 Alabama state census.

Jonathan and his wife Barbary/Barbara were early members of the Moriah Baptist Church of Christ (Primitive Baptist) in northern Butler County. They became members in 1831. Jonathan was appointed clerk in 1832 and served periodically until his death in 1871.

These are the first several paragraphs of Eric O. Cates Jr.'s story "Jonathan Harrison Family Record" (pages 272-273) in "The Heritage of Butler County, Alabama" (2003):

"Jonathan Harrison was the oldest child of George Harrison (See George Harrison article). He was born February 23, 1789 in North Carolina and came to Alabama in 1818 with his father and three brothers and two sisters. February 1, 1822 he bought the SW 1/4 Section 13, Township 11, Range 14, in the Searcy Community. (I have the land grant deed to this property which was the Jonathan Harrison home site, and was later the Josiah S. Cates home site, and is presently owned by Eric and Edwin Cates-EOC.)

"Jonathan married Barbary Wallace, the daughter of Abram Wallace and the sister of James and Seaborn Wallace. Seaborn married Selena Harrison, sister of Jonathan. The Wallace family owned property and lived in the same neighborhood. Barbary was born September 5, 1802 in South Carolina. Their first child was born when Jonathan was 31 and Barbary was 18."

---------------------------------------------

The children of Jonathan Harrison and Barbary/Barbara Wallace, as listed in this article by Eric O. Cates Jr., were:

1. Nancy Levina, born December 3, 1820, died January 25, 1895, married Ensley Whittle
2. Lucinda, born December 27, 1821, married Guttridge Mosley
3. John, born January 19, 1823, married first Elizabeth Tillery, second Peggy Tillery (sisters)
4. William, born April 1, 1824, died 1864, married Mary Jane Barganier
5. Barbary, born April 12, 1825, died January 12, 1872, married John H. Cheatham
6. Jonathan, Jr. born January 28, 1827, married Frances Tillery (sister of Peggy and Elizabeth)
7. George, born June 15, 1828, died 1873, Sarah Boatright
8. Rachael, born December 11, 1829, married S. J. Haden
9. King Seaborn, born February 14, 1832, married Henrietta Rouden
10. Levi, born November 29, 1833, married Abigail Mosley
11. Henry, born June 21, 1835, married Permelia Chestnutt;
12. Seana Caroline, born June 12, 1837, died 1875, married first Guttridge J. Cheatham, second Robert Bush
13. Martha Eleanor (Mat), born November 1, 1838, married first Joe McCoy, second Rev. William Cheatham
14. Elizabeth, born July 30, 1840, married J. L. Odom
15. Daniel, born April 3, 1842 married Sadie Barganier Wilburn
16. Catherine (Kate), born November 4, 1843, married William McCoy
17. Mary Jane, born July 6, 1845, married Isaac Grant.

After the children's list, the article said: "Some family members have said there were two other children but there is no record."

----------------------------------------------

There are several errors in this children's list, but the main observation is that having EXACT birth dates of seventeen children, unsupported by records in many of their later lives, as well as exact dates on other family events (such as Jonathan and Barbary's 1820 marriage, and his father George Harrison's 1834 death), in different articles by descendants Eric O. Cates Jr. and Richard G. Gibson, indicates that there was a Harrison bible whose entries were copied and passed down among descendants.

"Moriah Baptist Church of Christ" by Richard G. Gibson (1994: privately published) is a valuable resource for data on the Harrisons, Wallaces and allied families. It includes transcripts of the Moriah church minutes and members list, as well as Richard Gibson's personally researched genealogical data on the members and families (some of which was incorrect).

In his transcription of the church members list:

35. Jonathan Harrison E (baptised) 7/20/1831 Died 7/10/1871
36. Barbary Harrison E (baptised) 7/20/1831 Died 6/10/1888

Jonathan's death was reported in the church minutes: "Jonathan Harrison died July 10, 1871 age 82 years 4 months 13 days." This is the ONLY record of his death (since no bible record has been revealed), and it calculates to a birth date of July 27, 1789, not July 23.

His wife's death is also reported in the minutes, though without an age at death: "Barbara Harrison died June 10, 1888."

Jonathan and his wife Barbary are said to be buried in the Moriah Church cemetery in unmarked graves, but they're just as likely to have been buried in the Wallace-Harrison Cemetery near their home, where other Harrison-Wallace relatives are buried. No headstones for them have survived in either location.
