Served with the 66th Bomber Squadron, 44th Bomber Group as bombardier of "Lady Luck".
During a mission to bomb the airfields of Foggia, Italy the plane was apparently hit by flak after dropping it's bombs causing an extreme oil leak. When the engine failed the plane fell out of formation and was attacked by enemy fighters. After several direct hits the plane went into a spin with an engine on fire. According to two witnesses in the town of Ruoti, the plane exploded in mid-air.
He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
