Beaver Falls, Pa., June 10 - E. Dempster Merrick, aged 79 years, an artist of considerable note, died at 1 o'clock this morning in Beaver Valley General Hospital, at New Brighton, from cerebral hemorrhages. Mr. Merrick was born in Jordan, N.Y., August 24, 1832, and with his parents moved to Fallston, Pa. in 1837. He became a telegraph operator in early life, and for a time worked in Pittsburg, Cincinnati and Philadelphia. At the outbreak of the Civil war he became connected with the government's telegraph corps and served about one year. During 1862 and 1865 he was again in the Signal corps of the army. At the close of the war he returned to the Beaver Valley and engaged in the foundry business, and in 1885, was one of the organizers of the Standard Horse Shoe Nail Co. For a number of years, he has been retired ad devoted his time to art. He was an excellent artist and a number of his pictures were sold in New York. He had a extensive collection of paintings at his studio. He is survived by three brothers, Charles N., Frederick S. and Frank A. Merrick, all of New Brighton. He was not married.
