According to his Harvard 25th Anniversary bio he received severe injuries when he was torpedoed on the Sussex (a French cross-channel passenger steamer) on the English Channel in March of 1916 which resulted in eighty casualties. He was in and out of hospitals for the remainder of his life as a result of these injuries.
