Mary Pauline "Polly" Burke was born in Pendleton, on June 8, 1922, and grew up in the Hawthorne/Laurelhurst neighborhoods in Portland. Polly attended St. Mary's Academy and graduated from Washington High School. She attended Reed College and graduated from Marylhurst College. Polly served in the U.S. Navy "WAVES" from 1943 to 1946. Polly was a loving mother of four and a devoted wife to Dr. Harold Burke. Polly and Hal resided in Lake Oswego for the majority of their married life. She was a substitute teacher in Portland high schools, and taught English as a second language to foreign students. Polly was an avid tennis player and charter member of the Mountain Park Racquet Club. Polly was an inveterate reader with a special interest in history. Polly was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Hal; and her sister, Diane Kragrud. She is survived by four children, Malcolm, Mike, Tom and Kathy Burke; and her sister, Eleanor May. Polly is also survived by five grandchildren, Sara, Adam, Ian, Andrew and Laura; and one great-grandchild, Miles; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral will be held at Finley-Sunset Hills Mortuary, 6801 S.W. Sunset Highway, Portland, on Friday, Dec. 28, at 9:45 a.m. A procession to Willamette National Cemetery will immediately follow the service. Donations in remembrance of Polly Burke may be made to Blanchet House. Arrangements by Finley-Sunset Hills Mortuary.
