Was a cabinet maker by trade. Brought his family to this country in 1851, first locating in New York City. Followed his trade for two years in Brooklyn, and in 1853 moved to the Keweenaw Peninsula of Northern Michigan, being one of the pioneers. He landed first at Eagle River, MI., but soon moved to the head waters of Portage Lake, locating on the land later used to construct the canal, which land he later sold. During 1853-4 he worked in the mines near Houghton, while residing at the canal. He later moved to Houghton where he resided for 20 years until his death.
His first business in Houghton was a line of boats, plying between Houghton and Eagle River, carrying freight and passengers for about 2 years. Then he owned and operated a liquor store, again for 2 years. In 1859 he started the brewery, which was operated under the name A. Haas Brewing Company. He began with a 10-barrel copper kettle, gradually increasing to a capacity of 25,000 barrels per annum. He also became the owner of some 860 acres through various land grants signed by President Lincoln etc. He was a staunch republican, serving several terms as highway commissioner, also county coroner.
