Vivian Skibsted was born July 17, 1921 in Sac County, Iowa to Martin and Lona (Nielsen) Skibsted. She lived the first two years of her life in Sac County before her family moved to Buena Vista County, Iowa, where she lived the remainder of her life. Vivian was baptized in 1921 at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell and then confirmed at Nain in 1936.

Vivian received her primary education at the Newell Schools before graduating from Sulphur Springs High School in 1939. Following her high school graduation, Vivian left for Des Moines where she attended Grandview College for a year. She later went back to school, graduating from Buena Vista College in 1967 with a B.A. in Education.

On January 24, 1942, Vivian was united in marriage to Herluf E. Pedersen in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. Their union was blessed with three daughters: Darnell, Pamela and Andrea.

Vivian was a loving wife and devoted mother whose first priority was making a warm and comfortable home for her family, whom she treasured. She also taught 4th, 5th and 6th grade language arts in Early and Newell for many years. She was a member of Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, the I.E.A., N.E.A., as well as a member of the Danish Sisterhood. Vivian and Herluf both enjoyed and taught Danish Folk Dancing. She was a faithful, active, lifetime member of Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, where she taught Sunday school. She enjoyed playing piano, reading and gardening. Vivian found pleasure in nature and especially in watching birds. She was always happy to spot her favorite, the cardinal.

Vivian was a kind and gracious lady who had a gift for entertaining and making everyone feel special. She will be missed by all whose lives she touched.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters: Darnell and husband Willis Ripke of Newell, Pamela and husband Harry Horne of Houston, Texas, and Andrea and husband Art McWilliams of Logan, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Orlean Skibsted of Storm Lake, Iowa; as well as many other family members and a host of friends.

Vivian was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herluf on September 6, 1998; and by her brother, Thorton Skibsted.
