The fourth son in a family of all boys, Archie attended the Lick Spring District School in Argyle, NY. He sustained a head injury when a tree he was cutting fell on him. For therapy after surgery, Archie collected stamps and started raising honeybees. He continued to keep bees for many years thereafter. He purchased the Potter gristmill in Fort Edward in 1922 and moved his family there.
