William James Patterson was the son of John Ernest and Lillian May Burch-Patterson, he was born 29 May 1897 at Moscow Idaho. Shortly after Bill's birth the family moved to Asotin Washington where his mother Lillian died 13 Dec 1899. From the time of his mother's death until the summer of 1910, Bill was raised by his grandmother Mary Patterson. They lived at Asotin and Union Town Washington, and Ilo (Craigmont), Idaho. The summer of 1910 Bill joined his father and stepmother on the homestead on White Bird Ridge, south of Old Pollock. Bill joined the US Army in 1918 and served during World War I, after the war he returned to Riggins Idaho where he worked as a sheep herder for Walter Wisdom. Bill married Edna Gertrude Mitchell in New Meadows, Adams County Idaho on 2 Oct 1921. A son was born to this union, John William, 2 July 1924 at New Meadows. In 1934 the Bill Patterson's moved to Phillipsburg Montana and later to Butte where he worked in the copper mines. In 1942 Bill joined the US Navy and served during World War II as a Gunners Mate. After the war he returned to Butte and worked in the copper mines until he retired in 1952. Bill and Gertie moved to Riggins Idaho in 1963 and lived there until his death, 27 Dec 1983.
