Donna Johnston Hammond 87, devoted wife, beloved mother, loving grandmother, and longtime resident of Garden City NY, passed away on October 9, in Danbury CT.

Donna was born June 16, 1934 in Seattle, WA. The only child of the late, Robert and Clara Johnston (King). Donna attended Franklin High School in Seattle and later the University of Washington. Following graduation, she moved to New York City to pursue a modeling career where she met Allen (Al) Hammond and married on November 15, 1958. After a brief stay in Whitestone, Queens the couple returned to Al's hometown of Garden City in 1961 to raise their two children Robert and Gayl

Donna is survived by her daughter, Gayl Pidgeon (Russell Pidgeon) and grandsons Daniel, Andrew and Kevin, and son Robert Hammond (Grace Oliveri) and granddaughter Nikki and grandson Robert. She is predeceased by her devoted husband Al of 45 years.

Donna was an active member of the Garden City community for many years. She volunteered at Winthrop Hospital escorting patients with a smile, helped at the local library with book reviews and events, was a member of the Garden City Community Church choir and part of its fund-raising team selling pictures and frames at their annual fair. As a senior citizen, she participated in many activities at the Senior Center, including exercise classes, cultural tours and theater trips, and was an avid bridge player. Donna remained active with her friends in weekly bowling and tennis leagues into her 80's. She made long lasting friends and always welcomed new ones during her 60 years in Garden City.

Donna was consistently active with her nieces, nephews, and grandchildren, encouraging them and attending birthday, religious, school graduation, and wedding celebrations. Al's sister Phyllis (Hammond) and husband Elliot Burch lived in Garden City with their family; Daniel, Bill, Jehanne and Richard. Donna and Al enjoyed traveling with the Burch's to many high stakes Throughbred races supporting Elliot's career as a horse trainer. Donna was a primary caregiver to Al when he battled his own illness prior to his death in 2003.

A visitation will be held at Cassidy-Flynn Funeral Home, 288 East Main Street, Mount Kisco NY on Saturday October 23, 2021 between 10:00AM and 11:30 AM. A celebration of life service in Donna's honor will commence at 11:30AM following the visitation.
