Joe and Lena Lewis, immigrated to the United States from Latvia in the early 1900s and raised their six children in a Orthodox Jewish home, supported by one of two kosher butcher shops in Houston.

Lena came to the United States sometime in 1913 or 1914 through Galveston. Lena remembered the Hurricane in 1915 –they lived on Hamilton Street and Joe had a broken leg and she had a new baby (Libbie). She was scared so they all went to Aaron Lewis' Houston to wait out the hurricane (they lived just around the corner).
