F. John is the ancestor of the Missouri-Oklahoma-Texas Lindesmiths. He was born in Ohio and moved to Illinois about 1857. He talked of moving to Missouri, but never did, though all his children moved there after his death.

He had 6 sisters and one brother.
His mother died when he was 8 and his father, when he was 14. Don't know who he lived with then, but there were plenty of Lindesmith relatives around.

In 1839 at age 23, he married in Carroll County, Ohio to Lucetta Momenteller (marriage record says Elizabeth).
In 1840 they were in Columbiana Co, Ohio near his only brother, Joseph.
They also lived in Carroll Co, Ohio, probably near John Downs Jr., whose wife, Mary Ann was Lucetta's sister. In 1850 John and Mary Ann Downs had Ellen Lindesmith (3) living with them. Ellen was the daughter of Mary Ann's and Lucetta's sister, Louisa Momenteller Lindesmith.

John & Lucetta do not appear on the 1850 census. Maybe they were moving, but not sure where. Maybe they moved to Indiana. Some say son Newton Jasper was born in New Castle (Henry Co), Ind. But another interesting idea is that son Newton Jasper was born in or near Newton, Jasper Co, IL. It is a couple of counties NE of Jefferson Co, IL. Maybe the family landed there first and Newton was born in 1856 there before they moved on to Jefferson Co. Daughter Loretta (b1850) and son Joseph H. (b1853) died sometime before 1860, but not sure where.

Around 1857 the family moved to Casner twp, Jefferson Co, IL(PO Mt. Vernon) where in June, 1860 John became the postmaster at the Blue Ridge post office (which after being closed in 1858, was re-established May 31, 1860, and closed again July, 1861).
Son, Hiram died there in Aug 1859 and was buried in the Locust Grove Cemetery.

Son Hiram died in Aug 1859 in Jefferson Co, IL. (Buried in Locust Grove Cem, Walnut Hill, Casner Twp, Jefferson Co, IL).
On the 1860 census John was listed as a carpenter. John shook hands with Stephen Douglas and was so impressed with him that he voted for him in the Presidential Election of Nov., 1860, instead of Abraham Lincoln. However, brother-in-law John Downs named a son 'Lincoln' in 1861.

Between 1860 and 1870 the family moved 30 miles north to Fayette Co, settling somewhere around the little village of Shobonier. In 1877 Shobonier (just 4 miles south of Vandalia) had 275 inhabitants, 4 general stores, 2 hotels, 2 blacksmith shops, 1 wagon shop, and a brick church used by 3 denominations. The Lindesmiths did not live in the village, but outside somewhere. I have not located which direction.

Lucetta is listed on the 1870 census as "Malinda Smith", with children John, Newton & Alice. John is not listed with her.
Nearby is her sister Mary Ann & John Downs. [John and Mary Downs later moved to Galveston, TX and lived through the great hurricane of 1900 that demolished Galveston and killed thousands of people.]

John talked of moving to Missouri (which all of his children later did), but he stayed in IL. His wife, Lucetta, died of Typhoid (age 55) Aug. 23, 1878. John died 4 months later in Dec. and was buried beside his wife. Just cannot find what cemetery they are in. It seems like they would have been buried beside their son, Hiram, but there is no stone there.
