James L Patterson, the son of John Macklin and Nancy Bateman-Patterson, was born at Centralia, Maroin County Illinois abt 1848. On 28 February 1865, James joined Company H of the 80th Illinois Infantry at Springfield Illinois. On the 5 July he was transfered to Company A of the 38th Illinois Infantry, there he served until 28 Feb 1866 and was mustered out at Victoria Texas. After returning to Illinois he married Mary Ann Crain at Walnut Hill on 17 June 1869. Their first two children were born in Illinois, William Henry 11 Feb 1873 and Joseph Macklin 22 May 1875. The Pattersons moved to McCune Kansas where their next three children were born, John Ernest 22 Oct 1877, Charles A. 28 Mar 1880, and Mollie Grace 19 Jul 1884. In about 1894 they moved west where in 1897 James, Mary and Mollie were living at Uniontown, Whitman County, Washington. The spring of 1898 they moved down on the Snake River at Asotin Washington, there on 1 Mar 1899 James died of pneumonia and is burried in the Asotin Cemetery.
