Mr. Charles Edward Barger, 75, died November 12, 2012 in Memphis. He was born May 1, 1937 in Steele to the late Harvey and Agnes Curry Barger. His father lost his life in Europe during World War II.

Mr. Barger was a 1956 graduate of Steele High School and served his country in the U.S. Air Force in North Africa. He was united in marriage to Mary Helen Strong on October 11, 1958, in Caruthersville.

He served as a scout master, worked with Little League baseball, was a member of the Cooter Town board and a member of the Holly Grove Baptist Church. His involvement with the Cooter Fire Department was legendary. He worked as a civil engineer at the Blytheville-Eaker Air Force Base and worked for many years as superintendent of the Mt. Zion Cemetery along with his life-long friend and fellow 1956 SHS graduate, Howard Burns. He was also employed for many years at Burns Hardware.

Mr. Barger leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Mary Helen, of the home; one son, Eddy Barger and his wife, Gail of Jonesboro; grandchildren are Amy Barger, Pike Barger III, Justin Cunningham, Megan Taylor and Colton Taylor; one great-grandson, Clayton Cunningham.

He also leaves behind one sister, Linda Marshall of West Palm Beach, Fla., along with a host of friends and relatives, a loving church family, and the survivors of the Great Steele High School Class of 1956.

Services were conducted Thursday, November 15, 2012 at Holly Grove Baptist Church in Cooter, with Bros. David Lewelling, Joe Smith and Tim Abanathy conducting the services. Burial followed in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Steele.

Pallbearers were members and former members of the Cooter Fire Department: Chris Brown, Donald Gray, Donald Gray, Jr., Allan Brown, T.J. Roberson, Willie Gilmore, Bobby Allard and Randy Trimm. Honorary pallbearers were Charlie Jones, Eddie Gilbert, Rob Francis and Paul Shaw.

John W. German Funeral Home of Steele was in charge of arrangements.
