Hall of Fame Professional Football Player, Coach. Keys initial impact on the gridiron was during his collegiate years at the University of Western Kentucky, where he played at the center and linebacker positions. Additionally, he was a standout baseball player (pitcher and outfielder) whom earned All-Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors (1948). His athlete accomplishments were interrupted while he served with the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He joined the Montreal Alouettes (1949 to 1951) with whom he experienced a Grey Cup Championship (1949) during his rookie year and moved onto the Eskimos (1952 to 1954). While in Edmonton, he was a contributor to the Eskimos' 1954 Grey Cup Champion squad and is remembered for playing the title game with a broken knee (the final game of his career as a player). Individually, he earned All-Star status twice (1953 and 1954). He remained in the sport and embarked upon a lengthy career as a coach beginning as an assistant in Edmonton (1955 to 1958) and becoming their head coach (1959 to 1963). He moved onto serve as head coach of the Roughriders (1965 to 1970) and guided Saskatchewan to a Grey Cup title in 1966 and received the Annis Stukus Trophy as Canadian Football Coach of the Year in 1968.. His final field assignment was as head coach of the British Columbia Lions (1971 to 1975). He was enshrined into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame for his contributions as a builder to the league in 1990.
