Mary Belle Melvin, 87, passed away on March 18, 2004, in Murphysboro.

Mary Belle was born on Jan. 4, 1917, in Murphysboro, to John Franklin and Esther Jane (Powers) Craver. She married Joseph Kent Melvin on Aug. 12, 1945, in Murphysboro, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 30, 1980.

Having graduated from Murphysboro Township High School (Class of 1934), then Southern Illinois University and University of Illinois, Mrs. Melvin had been a librarian at Morris and Wheeler Libraries at SIU and the library at University School. Being a librarian only enriched her favorite hobbies of reading and collecting. She also had taught at Lincoln and Longfellow Schools in the Murphysboro School District and at Johnson City.

Mrs. Melvin was a member since her birth at the United Methodist Church in Murphysboro.

She was a charter member of the Jackson County Historical Society and a sixty year member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She was a member of the Jackson County Retired Teachers Association, SIU Women's Club Antique Study and SIU Alumni Association, American Legion Post 127 and the VFW Post 7190 Ladies Auxiliaries, Murphysboro Senior Citizens and the Elks Lodge.

She is survived by two children, Joe and wife Lisa (Schnautz) Melvin and Laura S. Wilson; ...
