Wayne loved to fish, and enjoyed playing dominoes, hunting, and spending time with his family.

He served in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. Wayne received an honorable discharge on July 27, 1945, after three hospital stays and a major operation on his feet due to trench foot and frost bite. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, and the Marksmanship Medal. After his discharge, he went back to farming and ranching, then as an oil field worker, and as a house mover. Among the many he moved, Will Rogers home was one of them. Wayne retired from Peabody Coal Company where he worked as a shovel operator. He was a charter member of the Odd Fellow Lodge and a member of the American Legion. Wayne loved to fish, and enjoyed playing dominoes, hunting, and spending time with his family.
