PONTOTOC - Dr. Paul L. Whiteside, 71, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Pontotoc. He was born March 15, 1932, in Jackson, Tenn. He was born and reared in Jackson, Tenn., and graduated from Jackson High School. He is a 1954 graduate of the University of Mississippi, where he played football for Coach Johnny Vaught. He also played basketball and ran track. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha. He coached football, basketball and track and taught eighth grade science in Greenwood from 1954 to 1958. He attended Millsaps College and coached football until 1959. He graduated from the University of Mississippi Medical School in 1963. He did his internship at Mobile General Hospital in Mobile, Ala., from 1963 to 1964. He began his private practice in Pontotoc on July 6, 1964. During his practice he delivered almost 1,500 Pontotoc Countians. He was appointed to the West Point Military Academy on two different occasions. He served as Pontotoc County coroner from November 1982 to 1988. He was an avid Ole Miss fan, and a member of the M Club, Loyalty Foundation and Ole Miss Alumni Association. He served in the National Guard. He was a member of West Heights Baptist Church.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc. Dr. Dan Robertson will officiate, and Wayne Mahon will deliver the eulogy. Burial will be in Baldwin Memorial Gardens in Pontotoc.

Survivors include his wife, Anne Irwin Whiteside of Pontotoc; three daughters, Suzy Cazort of Memphis, Paula Pratt of Pontotoc and Suzanne Henry of Kosciusko; two sons, David Whiteside of Pontotoc and Andy Strickland of Oxford; his mother, Vivian Whiteside of Jackson, Tenn.; a sister, Eileen George of Jackson, Tenn.; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Steve Montgomery, Billy Montgomery, Johnny Wilder, Danny Weatherly, Wayne Mahon, Tracy Davis, Dr. John Patterson and Dr. John Mitchell.

Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Hood, Dr. Hogue, Dr. Greer, Dr. Koehler and Dr. West.

Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.
