Born Sept. 9, 1933, in Centralia, Ill., went to join his beloved wife, Mary, in their Heavenly home at 4:10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, at Granite Nursing and Rehabilitation in Granite City, Ill. George was a devoted dad and grandpa and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends. He was a faithful member of Suburban Baptist Church in Granite City for over 20 years. The United States Marine Corp veteran proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict where he obtained the rank of sergeant. He retired in 1991 from McDonnell Douglas/Boeing Aircraft in St. Louis with 44 years of dedicated service in the shipping department.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary L., nee Harris, "Lonnie" Layton, whom he married on Oct. 24, 1958, at St. John United Church of Christ, Granite City, Ill., and who died on June 4, 2011; his parents, Noble Layton and Anna May, nee Townzen, Norton; his grandson, Bradley Wayne Layton; two sisters and three brothers-in-law, Nola Layton, Delores (Stanley) Gasho, Richard Pounds and Richard Madison.
He is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Keith (Ruth) Layton of Edwardsville, Ill., and Kevin (Beverly) Layton of Granite City, Ill.; four grandchildren, Tyler, Rachel, Drew and Elizabeth Layton, all of Edwardsville, Ill.; two sisters, Julia Pounds of Lakewood, Calif., and Carol Madison of Edwardsville, Ill.; his sister-in-law, Dorothy Wood of St. Louis, Mo.; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tom (Dawn) Harris of Collinsville, Ill.; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other extended family and many friends.
