William "Bill" Joseph Gibson of Pleasanton, Calif., passed away on Dec. 7, 2012, at the age of 85.

He was born in Butte on Dec. 6, 1927, and was a graduate of Butte High School, class of 1946, where he lettered in basketball and football.

With the Butte High football team, Bill was a Silver "B" (later a Golden "B"). In 1946, the U.S. Armed Forces sent him to Korea where he served proudly. After his tour of duty, Bill married Shirley May Burns in 1952 in Butte. Work transferred Bill and his family to Bountiful, Utah, in 1962. Bill was an active member of the Catholic Church. In 1964, he joined the Knights of Columbus and served in many positions, including Grand Knight. In 1972, Bill moved his family to Pleasanton, Calif., were he resided until his passing.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Shirley M. Gibson; his parents, Harry Gibson and Madeline Gibson-Garbarino; sister, Winnie Holman; and brother-in-law, George Burns.

Bill is survived by his daughters, Deborah Gregg, Donna (John) Byrne, Susan (Allen) Dunlow and Sandy (Steve) O'Hare; his sons, William Jr. (Tess) Gibson, Daniel (Deb) Gibson; his 12 grandchildren; and great-grandson. He is also survived by his siblings, Nancy (Harold) Zigrang, John "Hoot" (Pat) Gibson, Mary Lou Mansanti of Butte and Florence (Rich) Alden of Billings; his brother and sisters-in-law, Bill and Mary Fran Burns, Dana Burns of Butte, and Mary Dunstan of Seattle; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, at St. Augustine Church in Pleasanton.

Bill will be remembered for his devotion to his family, great sense of humor and love of the Notre Dame football team.
