William was a worker on the railroad when he joined the Confederate States Army. He enlisted in Company C 4th Alabama Infantry at Selma April 19,1861. He was wounded at Manassas, Virginia in July 1861. He was present at Appomattox Court House and was paroled there at the close of the war.
