Erika D. Smith

Erika D. Smith, 30, of Newark, DE passed away suddenly on Sunday, December 16, 2012.

Erika was born in Wilmington on May 5, 1982 and was a graduate of Christiana High School, class of 2000, where she was active in a variety of sports including field hockey, soccer and swimming. She attended Elizabethtown College and Wilmington University. Erika was an accomplished artist and possessed a great talent for painting and drawing. She loved children and enjoyed teaching art to them and sharing her talent with them. A well loved and friendly person, she was outgoing and had a generous spirit. Erika also had a passion for music, and especially enjoyed live performances.

Erika will be dearly missed by her parents, Dennis and Patricia (Rathgeber) Smith; her brothers, Jason and his wife, Kelly and Ryan; her nephew, Conor; and her nieces, Aubree, Stacy and Jessica. She is also survived by her grandmothers, Viola Rathgeber and Joyce Burke; her aunt, Jane Balbirnie and her husband, Michael and their children, Joanna Boozer and her husband, Blair, and David and Sean; her many Smith family members, to whom she was very close; her boyfriend, Jed Steinbaugh; and her beloved dog, KB.

She was predeceased by her grandfathers, Robert Rathgeber and Paul Smith, Sr.

Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Friday, December 21 from 5:00 - 7:00PM. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, December 22 at 10:00AM. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park.
