He was born Nov. 22, 1923, in Sevierville, Tenn., son of the late Arlie Hobert and Leota Holder Matthews.
Mr. Matthews attended Yorkwood Church of God, Gastonia. Scott was a US Army World War II veteran, having served in the Normandy, Rhineland and Northern France battles and campaigns. He earned the following medals: WWII Victory, Purple Heart, Good Conduct, American Campaign, Bronze Star, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Battle Stars.
He was retired from American Efird after 33 years of service.
A private funeral service was held Friday, June 4, 2010, at Greene Funeral Service, South Chapel, Gastonia. It was officiated by
Pastor Joel Shirley.
Interment was at Gaston Memorial Park, Gastonia.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Margie Miller Matthews of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and John
Parker of Gastonia, Maggie and Dan Cochran of Lawndale, Ruth M. Smith of Gastonia, Terri and Randy Hayes of Bessemer City;
brothers, Howard Matthews and Harvey Matthews of Tennessee, Edward Matthews of New Jersey; sisters, Beatrice Wilson of
Tennessee, Artella Richards of New Jersey; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, David Parker; son in-law, Robert A. Smith; sisters, Marie Stines,
Dorothy Frazier, Helen Matthews, Naomi Matthews; a brother, Eugene Matthews; and a brother in-law, Spence Richards.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Yorkwood Church of God, Building Fund, 405 Stagecoach Road, Gastonia, NC 28052.
