Stephen is also the main reason why our branch of the Pawlak family did not socialize with the rest of the Pawlak family. Grandma Pawlak warned her husband, Michael, the eldest brother in the Pawlak family, that under no circumstances were his children allowed to be around his siblings.
Stephen was a gangster in Buffalo in the 1920's. After a history of petty crimes as a juvenile he made it to the big leagues, and was sentenced to two life sentences in the Auburn State Prison for (1) being a habitual criminal and (2) for escaping from Auburn State Prison during a prison riot. He was rearrested in Buffalo, after his escape from prison, at the end of a shootout with Buffalo Police. The press reported first that he had died, but he defied them one more time and survived, where he was returned to the prison to stand charges for his role in the prison riot and escape. Shortly after his second life sentence for the escape, Stephen became involved in a second prison riot where he and another prisoner were holding the warden hostage. He was gunned down and killed by the New York State Police when they stormed the prison and restored order.
He was unmarried when he died. Although considering his gangster past, there just might be cousins out there that we don't know about. Perhaps one day there might be someone popping up on a DNA test submitted for genealogical purposes...
