Head-On Collision Kills Two

Brenda Sears, 30, Route 10, and John Johnson, 41, De Rider Lane, became the county's thirteenth and fourteenth fatalities of the year Wednesday night when they were killed instantly in a head-on collision on Indiana 58 west of Road 400W.

Mrs. Sears was taking three of her four children to church in Columbus when the accident occurred at 6:35 p.m. Her two daughters and son all suffered cuts to the face and head. They were taken to Bartholomew County Hospital where they were admitted and reported to be in fair condition today.

Police said Johnson was traveling west on Indiana 58 at a high rate of speed when he crossed the center line and slammed into the Sears van. Police could not find any skid marks to show that either driver had a chance to apply their brakes.

The husband told police that he and his son would have been in the van on their way to church as well had it not been for a baseball game that the boy was playing in. The had planned to join the family at church later Wednesday night.

Funeral service for Mrs. Sears will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Reed and Jewell Funeral Home by the Rev. Lee R. Morrisett. Persons may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday. Burial will be at Ogilville United Methodist Church cemetery.

She was born August 23, 1947, in Bedford to William and Grace Gardner Way, both deceased. She was married on November 14, 1964. She was a member of Seventh Street Church of God.

Surviving with her husband and four children are four sisters, six brothers, a half brother, a stepbrother and a stepmother.
