Nor Cal Saturday Evening June,1923: AGED INDIAN FIGHTER IS DEAD AT DOS PALOS HOME; BUILT YELLOWSTONE ROAD. DOS PALOS (MERCED CO.), JUNE 2- -James George, familiarly know as "Yankee Jim", who died here this week at the age of 94 years, 6 months and 11 days, was an old frontiersman and Indian fighter. He made his home with his brother, John George. Long before the Civil War, "Yankee Jim" immigrated to the frontier of the far West, where he served as a government scout for more than ten years. He built the first road into Yellowstone National Park. It runs through what is known as "Yankee Jim's Canyon," where he took up some land years ago. The road ran past his cabin, which served as a road house to many a weary traveler, among whom were the late Theodore Roosevelt, Rudyard Kipling and many others of national and international fame. "Yankee Jim" was laid to rest in the Dos Palos cemetery.
