British author. She wrote under the pen names of Catherine Cookson, Catherine Marchant and Katie McMullen. According to her own account, her books were based on her deprived childhood and on the people and conditions that she knew. Over time, many of her books were made into film and television. Cookson became Britain's 17th richest woman by 1990, supporting philanthropic causes and also medical research, particularly, into a cure for telangiectasia. In 1985, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire and made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1993. She died of heart failure in her sleep, age 91.
