John Japp

Mr. John Japp passed away Tuesday morning at 12:30 at the age of 79 years 7 months and 29 days. He was born in Aocum, Germany, Sept. 10th, 1836. The funeral will be held at the house Thursday at 2 o'clock with burial at the German cemetery. He came to America in 1857 and in 1887 he came to Nebraska and homesteaded the place now occupied by his son, John Jr.

He was married Oct. 12th, 1907 to Miss Katherine Wiese. To this union twelve children were born, eleven of whom with their mother survive to mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent father. His sons are August, John, Will, George, Ed and Ernest, all of whom are married except the latter two and all live near town. His daughters are Mrs. Minnie Schneider, who lives near Bennington; Mrs. Harry Miller, Mrs. Sherman Anderson, Mrs. Buck Rosenbaum, Mrs. Lester White, all living here. A number of grandchildren also survive him.

We will all miss Mr. Japp; he was a kind old gentleman with a good word for all. For a couple of years now his health has not been good but when the end came it was rather unexpected as he was not seriously ill until this week. His heart failing him coupled with his advanced age was too much for his strength. Everyone in town and this adjoining country will join in sympathizing with the bereaved family.

EDITOR, ENTERPRISE:

I am called this week to perform a painful task in announcing the death of Kennard's most substantial and highly esteemed citizen, John Japp, who passed away at 12:30 o'clock a.m. on last Tuesday, the 9th inst., after a brief illness, from an affection of the heart with which he had been troubled for some time past. He was taken sick on Sunday but was up and down during the day and on Monday his condition became so alarming that a trained nurse was brought out from Omaha to care for him. All efforts to stay the ravages of the disease proved unavailing and at 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday his spirit took its flight.

He was born at Wicamp, Germany, coming to America in 1857, to Iowa, where he remained until '67, when he came to Nebr., and located a homestead southeast of this place, where he was married to Miss Catherine Wiese Oct. 12, 1867 and they began their married life on this place, where they lived happily and contentedly and prospered for many years before retiring from active farm work and locating in Kennard to take life easy, in the enjoyment of the competence they had acquired, by industry and frugality.

To this union twelve children were born, eleven of whom survive the death of a fond and indulgent father and comfort the declining years of his devoted helpmeet, their aged mother. The sons and daguhters are: John F., August, William L., George, Edward and Ernest; Mrs. Minnie Schneider, Mrs. Katherine Miller, Mrs. Laura Anderson, Mrs. Emma Rosenbaum and Mrs. Elizabeth White, all residing in this vicinity, highly respected and prosperous citizens.

John F. Japp bought some land from the railroad company in 1887 and sold it to his father-in-law, Asmus Wiese, in 1891. After several more years the railroad company involved Asmus in a lawsuit over the land that went to the Nebraska Supreme Court. Can any lawyers or para-legals understand this enough to explain what was settled?
